You've heard the old saying "The Best Treatment is Prevention". This article from About.com is blow me away simple. This is a prostate cancer prevention checklist for men who may be at risk someday, otherwise stated as every man.

Some of it is so simple, but still necessary. Some of it, I use regularly in my clinical nutrition practice for other purposes but really never thought of it's impact on prostate cancer and one in particular, I had not read or heard anything about.

1. Regular prostate cancer screening. PSA test and digital rectal exam. Not necessarily pleasant but very necessary.
2. Lycopene-Eat cooked tomatoes regularly.
3. Selenium- Take a supplement of 200 mcg daily.

Zyflamend was a new product to me but I do already use a wide range of natural cox 2 inhibitors in my practice so in effect it is another way to accomplish the natural anti-inflammatory effect of Celebrex or Vioxx without the dangers.

I would also recommend addition of a high dose plant based protease enzyme to this regimen. PSA stands for prostate specific antigen. All antigens are protein based. Protease breaks down protein and if we can break down the antigen that is creating the risk, it would seem logical that we have reduced the risk.

It would seem that everything on the checklist other than testing is aimed at reducing inflammation or reducing free radical damage, and believe it or not, that is my exact approach to overall health improvement and life extension.

Measuring the ratio of free to total PSA (percent free PSA) PSA in the blood is either bound (attached to proteins) or unbound (free). Men with prostate cancer have a higher percentage of bound PSA and a lower percentage of free PSA than men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Research suggests that determining the ratio of free to total PSA in the blood helps distinguish between PSA elevations due to cancer and those caused by BPH. In men with PSA levels between 4 and 10 ng/mL, performing a prostate biopsy only when the percent free PSA is 24 percent or below would result in the detection of 90 percent of prostate cancers and reduce by 20 percent the number of unnecessary biopsies. Percent free PSA, as well as PSA density and PSA velocity, can also be used to determine the need for a repeat biopsy when the initial biopsy shows no evidence of cancer but cancer is still suspected.
